So easy and delicious. I added mushrooms in the last hour of cooking. Would be great with potatoes, pasta, or rice.

I made the recipe just as described and both daughters, grown, loved it. I was very happy, since it’s so easy, even a dad can make it 😀 Love to cook for the family using the crock pot, so I am very appreciative of this recipe. Made twice beore and making it for the third time this upcoming week. Thanks so much!

It tasted good! But like everyone else’s reviews the gravy was realllyyyy watery. I added cornstarch afterwards but it was still super runny. Might need to add that First or maybe thicken with flour then put it in crock pot also added garlic salt, onion powder, some pepper and garlic powder for flavor and didn’t use water but chick broth instead

Whole family loved it! And I have three picky eaters. I used pioneer dry brown gravy mix, added some mushrooms with the chicken, and one tablespoon of red cooking wine. Great with mashed potatoes (and cheesy broccoli!) I also only used two cups of water and it was perfect!

About 20 minutes before serving, I added 3 Tablespoons of cornstarch to the crockpot to thicken up the sauce. Once thickened, I used tongs to push & smoosh the chicken to loosely shred it up in the crockpot. This was perfectly paired with mashed potatoes in another crockpot. This recipe was great & you can't get much more simple then this!

Loved this dish. Used gravox lite supreme for gravy boiled prior to covering chicken.

Turned out excellent, I used chicken breast. wondreful flavors and real easy to make.

Really enjoyed this. Used boneless breasts and thighs. Gravy was thin; however, I simply took the chicken out of the pot, put my cooker on saute and let the gravy reduce down. Chicken was tender - gravy was perfect. Served over mashed potatoes with fresh steamed green beans. Will make this again.

Chicken was tender, but gravy, it was running. I thickened it with corn starch slurry but the gravy was bland so I think it just needs some more seasoning I did use reduced sodium packets to make sure it wasn’t too salty as mentioned in other reviews

Was really good I’d give it a 4.5 star but I don’t think the app will let me

It was very easy to make. Very suitable for ppl who doesn’t want to hassle with too many ingredients. After making it tonight I feel that instead of 7 hrs on low heat, I am gonna do 6 hrs next time. And it turn out a little too salty. Not sure if it was the onion soup mix or the gravy mix is making it salty. I will try to cut down on one of them next time to see if it helps. Overall it was pretty good 👍🏻

My family loved this. I used 1.5 cups of water and it came out perfect. Served over mashed potatoes, yum!!

I used bone in breast and it still dried out a little on the low side. Would probably work better as a pressure cooker recipe. Other than that, the flavor was good. I had to thicken the gravy with corn starch slurry.

Janet Martin 7 years ago

it was runny even after cooking for the prescribed time. I was very disappointed. The flavor was very bland.

FAQs

Is 3 hours long enough for chicken in slow cooker? ›

Cover your crock pot and cook chicken breasts on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Chicken is done when the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F. Use chicken in your favorite recipes.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in crockpot? ›

Always cook your boneless skinless chicken breasts on LOW for the best results. I do not recommend cooking boneless chicken breast on HIGH, as it will become very dry and tough, even if you check it early. On high, the chicken turns out drier; I consistently have the best results with low.

Do you need to put liquid in the slow cooker when cooking chicken? ›

Do You Need to Add Liquid? As long as the breast pieces are in a single layer, in contact with the slow cooker, then no, it's not necessary to add any chicken broth or chicken stock. If you're doing multiple layers, you will need to add liquid to cover the meat, but I don't recommend this.

Can you overcook chicken in slow cooker? ›

Can you overcook chicken in the slow cooker? Yes, it is possible! If the meat is cooked too long it could end up dry and not juicy and tender. The recommended times in my recipe are ideal for juicy results, but if you use less chicken than the recipe calls for I would recommend checking it sooner.

Is 4 hours on low enough for chicken? ›

A great rule of thumb is: For a whole chicken – Place it in your slow cooker breast side down. Cover with the lid and cook on High for around 4-5 hours or Low for 6-8 hours.

Is 4 hours in slow cooker enough? ›

How long should I cook a slow cooker recipe? If a dish usually takes: 15-30 mins, cook it for 1-2 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you slow cook it? ›

That is why tough meats become “fork tender” in the slow cooker. Chicken breasts have very little connective tissue; that means they can be cooked quickly because the long cooking time needed to soften connective tissue isn't necessary. They also have little fat, which means they can become dry if cooked too long.

Is it safe to cook raw chicken on low in a slow cooker? ›

Research conducted by USDA FSIS indicates it's safe to cook large cuts of meat and poultry in a slow cooker.

What happens if you don't put liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Not adding enough liquid can lead to burning.

"It's important to add enough liquid to ensure the bottom of your dish doesn't burn." If your meal does burn, the chef said to avoid scraping the bottom of the pot while stirring and serving because it can give the entire dish a burnt flavor.

Why is my slow cooker chicken always dry? ›

Chicken breasts are very low in fat and will be dry unless you cook them in a way that keeps them moist. They're a very unforgiving ingredient. You need to stuff them with something (as in a kiev or cordon bleu), poach them, fry them so they will absorb some fat, anything that isn't just grilling or baking them.

How do you keep chicken from drying out in a slow cooker? ›

To prevent poultry from drying out, use chicken thighs—they have more fat and won't dry out as quickly, says Finlayson. Cook thighs for about 6 hours and breasts for a maximum of 5 hours on low heat.

Is 10 hours too long for chicken in slow cooker? ›

You certainly can, the meat will simply fall to bits, which might be desirable for some recipes like “Chicken and Dumplings” which will take 8–12 hours on “Low” setting. As long as the temperature remains above 140 F you can leave your chicken in the cooker all day but try to avoid more than 12 hours…

Can I leave chicken in crockpot for 8 hours? ›

You're going to compromise the texture of chicken a bit when you cook it for 8 hours in the slowcooker. It's going to be super tender, but not “sliceable”, so use this to your advantage and shred the meat using two forks and toss it with the cooking liquid.
