Today's creation is inspired by the 'shake ladies' in Luang Prabang, Laos.

What I mean are the ladies operating the many fruit shake and sandwich stands. In no other place in SE Asia have we seen so many shake stands lined up next to each other than when we traveled in Laos last fall.

Look at all the variety!

Usually I had one of these refreshing passion fruit shakes as an afternoon pick-me-up when it was way too hot to eat an actual meal.

Since we don't have any passion fruit available back here in Canada, I had to recreate another energizing drink for summer afternoons here.

When I saw Sally's cookies & cream milkshake,it immediately reminded me of another concoction by the Laotian fruit stand ladies - a banana shake with Lao coffee and Oreo cookies!

It might seem like a strange combination on first thought but all the flavors blend together to a wonderfully smooth, creamy and energizing drink.

Adapting Sally's recipe I am using frozen banana chunks (the same stuff that makes awesome natural banana soft-serve) and whipped topping to up the creaminess-factor. Since I don't have Lao coffee, a couple espresso shots take its place but strong brewed coffee will work too.

Add Some Protein, Impress Your Relatives

Finally, to add a little more protein there is Greek yogurt in the mix as well. The slight tartness of the yogurt also helps to balance the sweetness of the Oreo cookies.

My brother-in-law was watching as I was whipping up another of these smoothies the other day. He works at Booster Juice, so he knows his smoothie facts, and he was quite surprised and skeptical once I added the coffee. However, being an avid coffee-lover, he just had to try it - and he LOVED it!

The final result is a creamy Oreo smoothie with a boosting caffeine kick. The frozen banana just lends creaminess and sweetness to drink but doesn't add a pronounced flavor.

I'd say give it a go Adele. I am not a huge banana fan either but love this shake. The banana flavor is only subtle (if at all noticeable) but it adds sweetness and a nice creamy texture to this beverage.

It would be just like a cookies and cream shake without the coffee which should be super delicious too!
