I stumbled upon this recipe when my husband wanted my homemade cranberry sauce in the summertime. Of course, it isn’t easy to find fresh whole cranberries when it’s not holiday time. Well, I found a clever way to make it, and I made a simpler version in the process.

My family loves Thanksgiving and we have a few favorite recipes. We enjoy cooking and ultimately love great food! Here is our lineup for most Thanksgivings:

You’ll be super surprised by how easy this recipe is to make. And you’ll be more shocked at how it tastes like homemade cranberry sauce. To be honest with you, I can’t tell the difference.

Growing up, my mom served our family the jelled canned cranberry sauce, and she carefully removed it from the can, sliced it up, and placed it on a plate. As you probably guessed, my brothers and I weren’t big fans of cranberry sauce.

Well, fast forward to many Thanksgiving later, and my sister-in-law makes a fresh homemade cranberry sauce. She added whole cranberries with diced apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar. It was heavenly and so much better than what I grew up for many years. Who knew homemade cranberry sauce recipes were floating out there that our family didn’t know existed.

So, now at Thanksgiving, I make a maple syrup cranberry sauce that is similar to my sister-in-law’s recipe. It is a delicious sauce but is limited to finding fresh whole cranberries.

And if you want cranberry sauce during the other 11 months of the year, you’re going without it.

Well, this is what happened when my husband was craving my recipe in the summer.

I decided to buy some canned cranberry sauce and add a few ingredients. Well, the results were fabulous! And if you want whole cranberries in the mix, I found that dried cranberries do the trick. Just add hot water to them, and they plump right up. At least some do, and the other reconstitute to about half their original size.
