Review of the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera
Zero-zoom cameras are no longer news in the world of digital technology. And many were waiting for Canon’s first mirrorless camera. I have often heard that with the capabilities of Canon, why is it dragging so long? Yes, I myself, collecting another heavy backpack with equipment in the mountains, thought, well, when is it already. At least I expected that weight would be a decisive factor for me. But still, I was not thinking correctly.
The Canon EOS R mirrorless camera appeared in September 2018. In December, the camera came to me for a test. And in this article I will talk about the camera and my impressions.
Body and ergonomics
The camera has changed in size, and is now comparable to cropped barks, weighs about 580g, which is also close to the younger SLR cameras. . And this is excellent, given that the camera is full-frame. Ergonomics and grip with resizing have also changed, for those working with Canon for a long time it will be unusual. For those who work with large DSLRs, it will probably be inconvenient. But this is a matter of time, I’m used to in one day.
The large control dial shrank and moved up. Drive under the index finger in the usual place. There are no familiar control buttons, for example ISO, access to these functions is carried out by the M-Fn button. Now you can program any buttons for different functions. For example, even the display backlight button is reprogrammed for any function. It is also possible to use a third control dial on RF lenses or with a special adapter. There was a completely new and unfamiliar in other models touch panel under the thumb. With its help, you can touch to change the parameters, which are also set as desired.
Viewfinder and screen
Access to all functions is through the on-screen menu. Through the touch screen, control is very fast. The screen rotates and it is very convenient. True, there is a minus when you work with gloves on. But this is a minus for all touch screens. Same problem with the little buttons. When you work with large gloves, this makes management difficult.
The Canon EOS R electronic OLED viewfinder is a moment that confuses professionals a bit, because you can’t control the picture with your own eyes. But the Canon EOS R has a great viewfinder. Its resolution is 3.69 million pixels, the picture looks very lively and natural. The image you see with the current exposure and white balance settings. I only noticed the flicker when I was shooting the maximum series in sequential shooting. But this did not affect the work.
A very convenient and interesting feature is the ability to change the focus point by moving your finger across the screen while looking at the viewfinder. A feature of the Canon EOS R screen is the ability to focus anywhere. That is 5655 AF points. And it is very convenient.
New bayonet mount and lenses
Canon EOS R received a new bayonet mount and new lenses. And this is the most important novelty, for which the future lies. A short working segment of the lenses and a change in diameter makes it possible to produce high-quality optics, minimizing the problems of aberrations and chromaticity.
The number of contacts changed from 8 to 12. This affected the speed of the focus. He has become faster. The lens processor has received additional functions, in fact, now the lens processor performs most of the functions, and not the camera, as in other Canon cameras.
Correspondingly, new lenses appeared, but the range is currently represented by only three Canon RF 50mm f / 1.2L USM, Canon RF 28-70mm f / 2L USM, Canon RF 24-105mm f / 4L USM. But the new line has a future. It is known that RF lenses will be better in image quality, they are faster, do not have a breathing effect, zooms have a parfocal optical scheme (that is, they do not change focus when changing the focal length). This expands the possibilities of video shooting.
To use EF and EF-S optics, there are three types of adapters: normal, with an additional functional ring and another with the ability to install filters.
Matrix and processor
The camera received the most advanced DIGIC 8 processor. The matrix is full-frame Type 36 x 24 mm CMOS with approximately 31.7 megapixels. Matrix with proprietary Dual Pixel technology.
Now let’s look at the capabilities of the camera when shooting with different ISO values.
From the photographs it can be seen that the noise becomes noticeable after ISO 1600. Up to this value, if they are, then this is not critical. And you can easily fix it with processing tools. Noise above ISO 5000 already greatly affects image quality. And if you use such values, only when quality is not critical.
Autofocus and high-speed shooting
Autofocus Canon EOS R is a work of art. It is so fast and accurate that there are no problems at all. All thanks to Dual Pixel technology. Despite the fact that focusing is only phase, this does not affect the work. For focusing, you can select any point on the screen. There is also face recognition and auto focus on the eyes. When focusing through the viewfinder, as before, you can select the focus point or group of points.
