Review of the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera
For the past few years, Canon has continued to produce bulky SLR cameras while competitors have been busy selling mirrorless products. As it turned out, all this time, Canon did not waste time in vain, but for a long time meticulously prepared its completely new device, which can make a splash in the world of photographic equipment. Meet – the first mirrorless camera manufacturer Canon EOS R.
Appearance and design
Case Canon EOS R turned out to be unusual, having almost nothing in common with previous models. It is made of strong and at the same time lightweight magnesium alloy – the weight of the camera is only 660 grams. The camera is protected from dust and water, so the EOS R can be taken for shooting in almost any weather. Canon also introduced a simple but useful feature: in the off mode, the camera shutter is lowered, and the likelihood of dust entering the lens is minimized.
What we especially liked about Canon was its full-fledged reclining display. Here it has a diagonal of 3.15 inches and a resolution of 2.1 million pixels. It is convenient to control the settings of cameras on it, navigate through the menu and change other parameters.
But the presence in the camera of only one slot for memory cards, on the contrary, upsets.
Nevertheless, this model will be bought by professionals for whom the camera is a full-fledged tool for work, and for them, the presence of a second slot for an SD card can be decisive in the matter of choosing a new device.
Now go over the controls. The model is equipped with an excellent grip, and the likelihood that the camera will fall out of your hands tends to zero. Above (exactly under the thumb) is the shutter button and the M-FN key to open the window for changing basic parameters (aperture, ISO, exposure). The MODE button is responsible for changing the shooting mode of photos and videos. All this information is displayed and duplicated on the second monochromatic screen, which displays the main shooting parameters. Also, if necessary, you can turn on the display backlight by holding the button with a light bulb.
An interesting element appeared on the main panel – a touch panel under the thumb. You can put one of the seven available functions on it: ISO, aperture change, white balance, focus control. We think this is a controversial decision: it was much easier to place a joystick with the same custom functionality.
By tradition, all the connectors are located on the left side. Here is the headphone and microphone input, micro HDMI, USB Type-C and a connector for the remote control.
As for the menu, it is the same here as with all Canon cameras, so you don’t have to get used to it at all. By the way, through it you can configure at your discretion absolutely any mirrorless key.
The camera runs on the latest DIGIC 8 processor, which does an excellent job of ensuring system performance, high frame processing speed and noise reduction in JPEG. EOS R is equipped with a full-frame matrix with a resolution of 30.3 megapixels. The range of the working ISO is 100 – 25 600, and the exposure level is EV -6 – 18, which allows you to take pictures without noise in almost complete darkness.
The EF mount was created back in 1987, and together with the release of the new EOS R camera, Canon decided to switch to a completely new mount – RF. So far, only four lenses have been released: Canon RF 24 – 105mm f / 4L IS USM, Canon RF 28 – 70mm f / 2L USM, Canon RF 35mm f / 1.8 Macro IS STM and Canon RF 50mm f / 1.2L USM.
The main feature of the new lenses, which catches your eye almost immediately, is the presence of an additional spinning wheel called the Control Ring. With it, you can change the aperture value or perform the assigned function. The wheel scrolls with a characteristic click, and this interferes when shooting video. But the lens can be made completely silent by contacting an official Canon service center.
Two lenses came to our test: Canon RF 24 – 105mm f / 4L IS USM and Canon RF – 50mm f / 1.2L USM. Both models have significantly increased the speed of autofocus compared to their predecessors. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the increased weight and cost. Also included with the Canon EOS R is an adapter for the old EF mount, and separately you can buy a more advanced version of the adapter with a built-in light and polarization filter.
Taking pictures on a Canon EOS R
Canon EOS R feels the colossal work of engineers on the autofocus system, which even before that did not cause any particular problems. Now there are 5655 focus points on the entire matrix.
In fact, most frames come in sharpness in the range of ISO 100-12800. Even in the dark, the EOS R feels great, because thanks to the DIGIC 8 processor and the updated system, frames are obtained almost without noise. Moreover, if you put a person in a dark corner, where you yourself will barely see him, the camera will be able to focus on him.
